  1. Macports is like apt-get for OSX, it contains many useful packages, and
  2. is a good way of keeping certain things managed and up-to-date.
  3. However, like many tools, it doesn\'t \'just-work\' on the networks in
  4. DCU, so here\'s a guide that will get it up and running within DCU.
  5. ## Macports Installation
  6. * Install [Macports](http://www.macports.org)
  7. * Then edit it\'s config file:
  8. `sudo vi /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf`
  9. * Hit Shift+G for the bottom of the file, and copypasta the following
  10. few lines in:
  11. `proxy_override_env yes`\
  12. `# HTTP proxy:`\
  13. `proxy_http proxy1.dcu.ie:3128`\
  14. `# HTTPS proxy:`\
  15. `proxy_https proxy1.dcu.ie:3128`\
  16. `# FTP proxy:`\
  17. `proxy_ftp proxy1.dcu.ie:3128`\
  18. `# rsync proxy:`\
  19. `proxy_rsync proxy1.dcu.ie:3128`
  20. * Then update the port tree:
  21. `sudo port selfupdate`
  22. * And if everything is correct, you should see something along the
  23. lines of:
  24. `The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you should run`\
  25. `port upgrade outdated`
