  57. `(snoogins) received 9 votes. Failchair received one vote :(`
  58. Events Officer:
  59. `Lotta Mikkonen (attol) was the only candidate, and was`\
  60. `elected by a majority show of hands.`
  61. Helpdesk:

  72. * Redbrick wins Best Website at the Clubs and Socs Awards, which were
  73. held in the Helix on Thursday 10th of April. Redbrick Chairperson
  74. Andrew Harford wins a First Five award for Best Individual.
  75. <!-- -->
  76. * 17th - Redbrick wins Best Society Website of a Large College at the
  77. BICS Awards in Dundalk - Best Website in Ireland!
  78. <!-- -->
  79. * 19th - Admins take down Murphy for a while to rearrange disk
  80. partitions, because /var/tmp really doesn\'t need 105GB. This part
  81. goes suspiciously smoothly, with nothing breaking. Admins then begin
  82. to move vhosts to murphy (unrelated, but we had planned it today
  83. anyway). This part takes 6 hours, and involves pain and cursing at
  84. computer screens, and werdz committing his second ever
  85. [IAF](/Inevitable_Admin_Fuckups "wikilink") when he accidentally
  86. deletes the apache configuration, and realises we had no backups of
  87. it. Luckily, the important parts were modularised (thank you,
  88. Debian), so restoring the default configuration and rewriting our
  89. bits only took about half an hour. The Redbrick main site is then
  90. moved to murphy\'s local disks, and everything is faster afterwards.
  91. <!-- -->
  92. * 24th - It is pointed out in \#lobby that Redbrick hasn\'t been
  93. rooted in years.
  94. <!-- -->
  95. * 25th - [Redbrick gets rooted](/Great_Hack_of_2008 "wikilink").
  96. Elected root holders (three out of four of them on INTRA) cry.
  97. * Decision taken to take redbrick offline at about 10am. Network
  98. is disconnected by taking down the interface connecting us to
  99. CSD on enzyme.
  100. * Root holders in DCU spend the day running between fourth year
  101. projects and looking through logs looking for evidence of the
  102. intrusion.
  103. * Reinstall begins later on, with the help of atlas. Minerva is
  104. reinstalled first, as it\'s needed for us to receive mail. First
  105. packages are installed again there by 9.50pm that night. The
  106. internet connection is switched back on and deathray is
  107. configured to receive and store mail by about 1am. Everything
  108. else remains unavailable, and the network is left in a
  109. rediculously complicated segregated state to stop anyone
  110. accessing anything.
  111. ## May
  112. * 16th - Redbrick chairperson, Robert \"robby\" O\'Reilly, receives an
  113. email containing the Redbrick root password. He informs the
  114. committee of this, but then deletes the email.
  115. <!-- -->
  116. * 22nd - Robby is told to resign by lil_cain in Fibbers. \"RESIGN!\"
  117. soon becomes a popular catchphrase and a rallying cry for
  118. disgruntled members and/or trolls.
  119. <!-- -->
  120. * 23rd - Robby, the Redbrick chairperson, resigns from his position.
  121. ## June
  122. * 9th - Receive emails the Redbrick membership informing them of the
  123. recent events:
  124. `Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2008 00:11:39 +0100`\
  125. `From: Andrew Harford <receive@redbrick.dcu.ie>`\
  126. `To: announce-redbrick@lists.redbrick.dcu.ie`\
  127. `Subject: [Announce-RedBrick] RedBrick Back Online, Chairperson Resigns`\
  128. `Reply-To: committee@redbrick.dcu.ie`\
  129. `Sender: announce-redbrick-bounces@lists.redbrick.dcu.ie`\
  130. \
  131. `Hi,`\
  132. \
  133. `We are pleased to announce that RedBrick is back online following a disk`\
  134. `failure in our primary storage array (minerva) on Tuesday evening. No data`\
  135. `was lost, and the array was re-built sucessfully with a replacement disk.`\
  136. \
  137. `We are planning to schedule downtime this Saturday to that will allow us`\
  138. `to reduce the number of disks in use on minerva, meaning there would be`\
  139. `spare disks available and installed in the event of future failures.`\
  140. \
  141. `This work is dependant on re-installing severus, and creating a full backup`\
  142. `of minerva in advance. More detailed notice will be given via boards/motd`\
  143. `later in the week.`\
  144. \
  145. `I must also take this opportunity to announce the resignation of our`\
  146. `chairperson, robby, and explain the circumtances leading up to this.`\
  147. \
  148. `On Friday May 16th robby told the committee over irc that he had received`\
  149. `an email containing the root password that had been in use on minerva & murphy`\
  150. `when RedBrick was hacked.`\
  151. \
  152. `Robby provided this password, but told us that he had deleted the email, which`\
  153. `was received from 10minutemail.com. Myself and the other admins found it`\
  154. `odd that someone would go to the relative trouble of sending mail via`\
  155. `this service, and that robby would delete this potential evidence.`\
  156. \
  157. `The following Monday I emailed the committee, requesting that we hold an`\
  158. `emergency meeting to dicuss this email. Robby replied, saying he would`\
  159. `be unavailable for any meetings that week. Given that the semester was ending`\
  160. `and people would be gone home by the next week it was decided to hold the`\
  161. `meeting anyway, on the Thursday evening. This was the first meeting called`\
  162. `by anyone since before the network had been compromised.`\
  163. \
  164. `At this meeting the committee decided that in robby's absence the only`\
  165. `course of action was to discuss the issue further over the email.`\
  166. \
  167. `Late that night, cian, johan, werdz and I met robby in Fibbers. Cian, Johan and`\
  168. `I expressed our discontent with the situation by telling robby he should resign.`\
  169. `Whatever the circumstances, it was pretty unprofessional of us to have a go`\
  170. `in public like that, and we apologise for our actions.`\
  171. \
  172. `The following afternoon dano mailed the committee outlining our conversation`\
  173. `about the email, and asking robby for more information. Robby replied to this`\
  174. `email with his resignation, citing the events of the previous night as his`\
  175. `primary reason.`\
  176. \
  177. `An EGM will be held at the earliest oppertunity next semester to elect a new`\
  178. `chairperson, however the committee have not decided how best to fill this`\
  179. `position in the interim, and will be happy to take on board any suggestions`\
  180. `from members.`\
  181. \
  182. `All the best,`\
  183. `andrew.`
  184. [Rabble
  185. ensues](http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055308210).
  186. ## September
  187. Redbrick returned to close to normal, except for murphy at some point at
  188. the start of this month
  189. * 29th Academic year starts back up.
  190. CAIS and CASE are no longer streams of the CA course. Instead there are
  191. now two courses: Computer Applications (CASE) and Enterprise Computing
  192. (CAIS).
  193. For some reason EC does not actually require you to do programming and
  194. is considered a joke by some of the snobbier members of Redbrick.
  195. ## October
  196. * 7th & 8th - Clubs and Socs Day - The HUB gets taken over by freshers
  197. and not so fresh students. C&S day a chance for students to sign up
  198. for RB and any other society that takes their fancy.RedBrick were
  199. giving out Red Slushies to those who joined on the day(these seemed
  200. like a good idea, but tasted minging). According to an email from
  201. train on the 12th of Oct RB signed up a total of 224 members (this
  202. figure subject to change)
  203. <!-- -->
  204. * 8th EGM takes place.
  205. First year representative:
  206. `Emma was the only candidate and was elected by a majority show of hands`
  207. Chairperson:
  208. `Kat Farrell (AngelKat) was elected with 29 votes. Kevin Lally`\
  209. `(kevinly) received 12 votes.`
  210. * EGM also sees the sign up of those who are interested in a trip to
  211. Finland the home of attol and linux.
  212. <!-- -->
  213. * Sometime before the 25th - Two of Redbrick\'s beloved Helpdesk team,
  214. Mr. Sean Hand and Mr. Gavin Tubritt, died in a mysterious fire in
  215. the server room, thus leaving the committee. The blaze is believe to
  216. have been caused by an overheated server catching fire, undoubtedly
  217. the result of bad adminning. Cian was unable for comment at the time
  218. of the tragedy, but there was a lovely smell of bacon in the server
  219. room afterwards. It is also revealed that Kevin Fox can\'t use
  220. bullet points in MediaWiki.
  221. \[this could be translated as gmblitis and revenant resigned. (Cian, now
  222. available for comment)\]
  223. * 25th Intersocs paintballing event - Redbrick win at paintballing
  224. ## November
  225. * 4th - Clubs and Societies Ball - The highlight of all soc heads
  226. calendar C&S ball this year in Citywest. Redbrick gentlemen don some
  227. suits while the ladies opt for the dresses. Great night had by all
  228. for those of who can remember.
  229. <!-- -->
  230. * 11th - werdz presents workshop \"Web design for beginners\".
  231. <!-- -->
  232. * 13th - Attol gets all those heading to Finland nice and excited
  233. about the trip
  234. <!-- -->
  235. * 14th - RB night out in the Woolshed
  236. <!-- -->
  237. * 29th - Intersocs night. Location Bull & Castle.
