  1. How to use the boards in Thunderbird (or, presumably any other client,
  2. but they\'re crap).\
  3. Thanks to [igy](/User:igy "wikilink") who actually sent me the settings
  4. for this.
  5. ## Connecting to Redbrick
  6. To connect you have to forward a port as part of your ssh connection, so
  7. this will only work while you\'re connected to Redbrick. On Redbrick,
  8. the only server that supports this is deathray, so you must connect to
  9. deathray first, and then you can ssh to murphy.
  10. ### Linux/Unix/Mac
  11. Normally, to connect you would type something like:
  12. `ssh`
  13. Instead type:
  14. `ssh -L 1119:carbon.internal:119`
  15. and you\'ll be prompted for your password like normal. To get onto
  16. minerva then just type:
  17. `ssh minerva`
  18. If you\'re really cool and use gnome, you can setup a nice desktop
  19. launcher with this command:
  20. `gnome-terminal --command="ssh -L 1119:carbon.internal:119" --hide-menubar`
  21. ### Windows
  22. Open putty, and select the tunnels options page.
  23. [Image:News_putty_1.jpg](/Image:News_putty_1.jpg "wikilink")
  24. As above, enter:
  25. `Source Port: 1119`\
  26. `Destination: carbon.internal:119`
  27. then click the add button.
  28. Once that\'s done go back to the session options.
  29. [Image:News_putty_3.jpg](/Image:News_putty_3.jpg "wikilink")
  30. In the hostname box add
  31. ``\
  32. `or`
  33. You\'ll want to save all these settings so you don\'t have to do this
  34. everytime, so type a name in the box as shown above, and click save.
  35. Next time all you\'ll have to do is double click on \"redbrick\" in the
  36. saved sessions list.
  37. Click open to start the connection. You\'ll be prompted for your
  38. username and password as usual. Once you\'ve done that type
  39. `ssh minerva`
  40. to get back to minerva.
  41. ## Setting up Thunderbird
  42. Go into account properties, select add account, pick newsgroup.\
  43. Enter your name, and your redbrick email address.\
  44. For Newsgroup server enter \"localhost\"\
  45. \
  46. Once you\'ve done all that, all that\'s left to do is change from the
  47. default port to the one we\'ve set up the forwarding on, so go into the
  48. settings for the account and change the 119 to 1119.
  49. [News_thunderbird_3.jpg](/Image:News_thunderbird_3.jpg "wikilink")
  50. To subscribe to boards, just click on \"Manage Newsgroup
  51. subscriptions\".
  52. [News_thunderbird_2.jpg](/Image:News_thunderbird_2.jpg "wikilink")\
  53. \
  54. And thats it, happy posting.
